Job Overview

As a Security Officer at UJ, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety of the campus community – students, staff, visitors, and property. This includes physical patrolling, access control enforcement, handling emergency situations, and maintaining a secure environment across various UJ campuses.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Security Services
    • Protect UJ’s property, staff, students, and visitors through physical patrolling.
    • Enforce access control and ensure adherence to security policies.
    • Report and address any infrastructure defects, such as gates or burglar-proofing.
    • Secure crime scenes and provide accurate reports of incidents.
    • Monitor and operate security systems when required.
    • Assist in investigations and handle emergency incidents efficiently.
  2. Access Control
    • Perform and enforce UJ’s access control procedures.
    • Verify access permits for personnel, students, and visitors.
    • Conduct searches as required, and secure gates and doors after hours.
  3. Customer Services
    • Provide a friendly and professional security service to all staff, students, and visitors.
    • Contribute to a culture of service excellence and build positive relationships.
    • Assist in organizing events, open days, and emergency incidents as needed.
  4. Health and Safety
    • Act as the first line of response in medical or fire-related emergencies.
    • Ensure proper use and maintenance of security-related equipment.
  5. Professional Development
    • Participate in ongoing training to improve skills and stay updated with security procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 / Matric / NQF4 equivalent qualification
  • Certifications: Valid Grade C Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) registration
  • Experience: At least 2 years in security services
  • Skills: Basic Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Clearance: Clearance from South African Police Services
  • Driver’s License: Valid and current driver’s license
  • Physical Fitness: Must meet the medical, psychological, and physical fitness standards

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • NQF5 qualification or higher
  • Knowledge of electronic access control and video management systems
  • Experience in educational or corporate campus security environments
  • Professional Drivers Permit (PDP)
  • Higher PSIRA Grades (A or B) or Armed Reaction, Special Events Security
  • Valid SAPS firearm competency certificate
  • First Aid and Firefighting training

Working Conditions

  • Shift work, including day, night, and alternating shifts to meet the University’s operational needs.
  • May require travel between campuses or working in varying weather conditions.
  • Uniform required; firearm carrying may be necessary.

Screening Requirements

Candidates will be required to undergo a pre-selection program, which may include:

  • Screening by MIE, SAPS, or SSA
  • Pre-appointment medicals
  • Polygraph test
  • Psychometric test
  • Physical and mental fitness assessments
