The mandate of the Department of Energy is to administer all matters related to nuclear energy as required by legislation and international agreements. These can be divided into three key activities, namely Nuclear Safety, Nuclear Technology, and Nuclear Non-Proliferation.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Apply scientifically recognized and validated process steps to interpret data and deliver technical solutions that are both of exceptional quality and cost-effective.
  • Analyse ad-hoc samples for which validated methods do not exist, using acceptable laboratory practices to address new challenges and provide effective solutions.
  • Provide accurate and clear reports on assigned tasks, ensuring they are delivered within the project framework. 
  • Develop and validate methods and systems in accordance with relevant standards to introduce new applications that enhance laboratory capabilities.
  • Assist with funding proposals to ensure the implementation of necessary actions, such as purchasing new instrumentation and hiring additional staff.
  • Collaborate with support teams to diagnose and resolve technical issues effectively.
  • Develop factsheets to promote NLS products and services, highlighting their features and benefits.
  • Participate in scientific panels, working groups, and national scientific conferences to showcase LS capabilities and promote them within the market.
  • Prepare technical reports on projects or activities undertaken, documenting findings and outcomes.
  • Contribute to assigned product development activities, providing input and support throughout the process.
  • Participate in product concept development activities, taking responsibility for tasks assigned to help shape new products.
  • Verify the performance of methods and instruments by reviewing annually condensed reports on quality control data, ensuring continuous improvement in quality control measures and analytical results.
  • Support the laboratory’s quality system (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025) accreditation and maintenance, in line with activities outlined in the NLS Quality Resource Plan.
  • Actively participate in BBS (Behavior-Based Safety) activities.
  • Develop and update procedures and protocols to align with national and international RC (Regulatory Compliance) guidelines.
  • Lead investigations into technical non-conformances related to applicable management systems within the laboratory.
  • Provide training on both the theory and practical aspects of techniques and methods in the areas of operation to ensure the ongoing competence of technical personnel.
  • Offer training and practical support to lab technicians/analysts in basic lab practices, routine analysis, and newly developed methods.
  • Develop and supervise procedures for lab analysis, data handling, reduction, and the application of validated analytical methods.
  • Maintain and ensure that professional certification is kept up-to-date and valid on an annual basis.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

  • BSc Honours Degree in Microbiology or Equivalent. (NQF 8)
  • MSc will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • 3-4 years’ experience in lab operations.
  • 3-4 years practical experience of Microsoft Excel, MS Word, Power Point, Share Point, and LIMS.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a SANAS Technical Signatory on accredited methods.
  • Certificate in SANAS ISO/IEC 17025 Systems and ISO 9001.
  • Be legible to be registered as Radiation & Chemical Worker.
  • Professional Certification in Natural Sciences or legible for certification.
