The JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) was established to provide financial support to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The bursary is open to students in their 2nd year, 3rd year, or Honours level of study at selected universities.

As Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The JSE embraces this by investing in the leaders of tomorrow.

Fields of Study Covered

Applicants must be studying full-time towards a degree in one of the following fields:

  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Actuarial Science
  • Information Technology
  • Informatics
  • Data Analytics
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Accounting

Eligible Universities

Only applications from students enrolled at the following universities will be considered:

  • University of Pretoria (UP)
  • University of Johannesburg (UJ)
  • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)
  • Nelson Mandela University (NMU)
  • University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • University of Limpopo (UL)
  • North-West University (NWU)
  • University of Fort Hare (UFH)
  • University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
  • University of the Free State (UFS)

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen from a designated group
  • Household income must not exceed R650 000 per annum
  • Must be in 2nd year, 3rd year, or Honours level of study in 2026
  • Must have achieved a minimum aggregate of 70%

  • Proof of registration
  • Recent academic record
  • Proof of household income
  • Proof of residence
  • Affidavit confirming the information provided
