Knysna Local Municipality is a Category B municipality within the Garden Route District of South Africa's Western Cape province.

Knysna Local Municipality is a Category B municipality within the Garden Route District of South Africa’s Western Cape province. It is currently under provincial administration due to chronic failures in basic service delivery and infrastructure management. The municipality is located on the coast along the Garden Route. It is bordered by the George Municipality to the north and west and the Bitou Municipality to the east.

Internship Overview:

  • The MFMIP is a structured professional training and work experience programme with the goal of providing high quality training and practical exposure in all aspects of a Municipal Budget and Treasury Office, which is governed by the Municipal Finance Management Act, No 56 of 2003 and the underlying reforms. The programme has a logical training sequence that builds on the skills and competencies acquired during University and Technikon training and ends with a qualification in Municipal Finance Management in accordance with the Municipal Regulations on Minimum Competency Levels, Gazette 29967 of 15 June 2007.

Key Internship Initiatives:

  • Meet specific learning outcomes as set out in the National Treasury Finance Intern Skills Development Programme.
  • The successful applicants will primarily be trained in the key areas of the Finance, Internal Audit and Risk departments to ensure that adequate skills are developed.
  • Exposure to the implementation of the MFMA, GRAP Standards, Policies and Procedures.
  • Applicants must have matriculated in the Garden Route District (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Oudsthoorn Hessequa and Kannaland), and must be in possession of a completed three-year Bachelors Degree or an Advanced National Diploma (NQF Level 7), with majors in Accounting, Business or Finance. Internal Audit and/or Risk Management will be an added advantage.
  • Reasonable written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy are further requirements.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to sign an Internship agreement, which is in addition to the employment contract. This will ensure commitment to the MFMI Programme which requires, amongst others, full participation in the training and workplace programs.
  • Interns will be subject to the Municipal Disciplinary Code.
  • An annual increase determined by the South African Local Government Bargaining Council applies. Only female applicants will be considered.
