Bursaries will be awarded for undergraduate studies in the following engineering disciplines related to the mining sector:
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mining Engineering
These bursaries aim to develop the next generation of skilled engineers and professionals who will contribute to South Africa’s mining and industrial growth.
What the Bursary Covers
The Northern Coal Bursary provides financial assistance for study-related expenses, which may include:
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed textbooks and academic materials
- Accommodation and meal allowances (where applicable)
Additionally, bursary recipients may benefit from mentorship and vacation work opportunities within Northern Coal’s operations.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Northern Coal Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- Must be studying or intending to study full-time towards one of the above-mentioned Engineering qualifications in 2026
- Must be studying or accepted to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution
- Must have a minimum of 60% in Mathematics and Science
- Must have a strong academic record
- Must demonstrate self-discipline, energy, and commitment to academic success
- Must have good communication and problem-solving skills
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid certificate of fitness in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act
- Preference will be given to applicants from local communities in line with Northern Coal’s Employment Equity and Social & Labour Plan commitments.
