The Cape Winelands District Municipality covers an area of 22 309 km2 and is divided into five subdistricts, each with their own local municipality. These are Stellenbosch, Drakenstein, Witzenberg, Breede Valley and the Langeberg. The district is the second most populace area in the Province, with 895 529 people calling the area home.

The Disaster Management Internship Programme is designed to provide practical work experience in disaster risk reduction and community safety. Interns will assist the Division: Disaster Management with operational activities, reports, training initiatives, stakeholder coordination, and awareness programmes.

Job Purpose

  • Assist with responding to incidents/disasters
  • Compile Disaster Management reports
  • Coordinate stakeholder engagements
  • Support the implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction initiatives
  • Liaise with role-players on incidents and early warning systems
  • Assist in training and awareness programmes
  • Provide general administrative support

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma or Degree in Disaster Management, Public Administration, Office Administration or a relevant qualification
  • Certified copy of academic records with results sheet
  • Valid Code B driver’s licence
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS – ability to use Google Earth required)
  • Excellent communication and written skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape
  • Physically fit and able to work in inclement weather conditions
