The vision of the Gauteng Department of Social Development is of a caring and self-reliant society. Its mission is to transform our society by building conscious and capable citizens through the provision of integrated social development services. The Department's strategic outcome-orientated goals are to provide: support to core business in rendering effective and efficient services; efficient and effective integrated developmental social welfare services to service recipients, focussing on children, the youth, older persons, persons with disabilities, and women; and efficient, effective anti-poverty community interventions, youth development and women empowerment services to beneficiaries promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) is offering bursaries for students residing in Gauteng who are passionate about the Social sector. This bursary program supports students studying in the following fields:
- Clinical Psychology
- Community Development
- Demography and Population Studies
- Financial Management
- Occupational Therapy
Purpose of the Bursary The primary aim of the bursary is to promote skills development and ensure quality education for academically excellent students in Gauteng.
Coverage of the Bursary The bursary will cover:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed books and study materials
Selection and Notification Candidates will be contacted within three months of the application deadline. If no response is received within this period, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. Successful candidates must sign a contractual agreement with the Gauteng DSD.
Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have resided permanently in Gauteng for at least one year before applying
- Be in Matric or have completed Matric
- Be studying or planning to study full-time in 2025 in one of the specified fields
- Be enrolled or accepted at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Have a strong academic record
- Plan to pursue a career within the Social sector
- Not be a recipient of any other bursary funding
Encouraged Applicants The bursary is open to students of any race or gender, students with disabilities, and students leaving child and youth care facilities.

- Matric certificate
- All completed educational qualifications
- Proof of acceptance or registration at a tertiary institution (on official letterhead)
- Motivational letter
- Proof of residence in Gauteng
- Parents/guardians’ proof of household income (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or proof of SASSA grant/pension)
- IEC voting district verification printout
