As Africa’s most influential commercial city, it is a hub for business, finance, and trade. However, it faces significant challenges, including urban decay, infrastructure issues, unemployment, and financial instability. The City of Johannesburg is a Category A metropolitan municipality, giving it exclusive executive and legislative authority over its jurisdiction.

This internship is a work-based training opportunity aimed at providing practical experience for students who require workplace exposure to complete their academic qualifications or gain experiential learning after graduation.

The initiative forms part of CoJ’s effort to promote youth development, skills enhancement, and employment equity within the municipality.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • Currently enrolled as a student studying towards a diploma or certificate
  • Computer literate (MS Office Applications)
  • Knowledge or training in document management, archiving, or administration is an advantage
  • Understanding of the public sector will be beneficial
  • Must be a resident of Johannesburg

Primary Function

To provide administrative support related to effective document and information management systems, ensuring smooth correspondence flow, retrieval, filing, and disposal of records in compliance with relevant guidelines and legislation.

Key Learning Areas

Interns will gain experience in:

  • Providing administrative support for document management and records systems
  • Classifying, registering, scanning, and storing records electronically
  • Filing, retrieving, and disposing of obsolete documents and files
  • Assisting with office administration and registry processes
  • Learning the fundamentals of document archiving and information systems

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organisational ability
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of City of Johannesburg regulations
  • Understanding of the National Archiving Act (NAA)
