Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA), which now trades as Volkswagen Group Africa, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (VWAG) in Germany. It is the largest German investment in South Africa and a major contributor to the country’s economy. The company’s Kariega plant has been in operation since 1951 and is the sole global manufacturer of the Volkswagen Polo, which it exports to 38 countries. The plant also builds the Polo Vivo for the local South African market.

Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) is offering exciting opportunities for passionate and ambitious individuals to participate in its Technical Apprentice / Learnership Programmes. These programmes are designed to provide full-time access to technical and trade-related training, equipping participants with essential practical skills needed within the automotive industry.

Administered by the Technical Learning Academy (TLA), the initiative aims to uplift technical competencies among both employees and the surrounding community, with full support from the Union.

Available Apprenticeship / Learnership Fields

Applicants may choose one primary and one secondary field of study from the following:

  • Electrical
  • Mechanical Fitter
  • Millwright
  • Automotive Motor Mechanic
  • Tool Making
  • Welding
  • Transportation Electrician
  • Mechatronics Technician

Entry Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric (Grade 12) with passes in core Mathematics and Physical Science (Maths Literacy will not be accepted).
  • N3 certificate with at least four subjects, including core Mathematics and Physical Science, or higher qualification.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Be available for interviews conducted by a selection panel.
  • Indicate both a 1st and 2nd choice of training field.
  • Be willing to complete studies on a part-time basis.
  • Refrain from working overtime during the programme unless authorised.

Required Documents

When applying, please include the following:

  • Certified copy of South African ID (not older than 3 months).
  • Certified copy of highest school or college qualification (not older than 3 months).
  • A motivation letter explaining why you wish to join the programme and indicating your preferred field(s) of study/training.
  • Your working cellphone number and an alternative contact number.
  • Current job title and SAP number (for internal permanent VWSA employees only).

All documents must be uploaded as attachments on the SuccessFactors system.

Important Notes

  • Employees who have previously qualified through a TLA Apprenticeship or Learnership will not be considered.
  • Successful internal candidates will be placed in available positions within Production at the completion of the programme.
