The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Transport is the provincial government body responsible for roads, traffic management, and public transportation in the province.

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Transport is the provincial government body responsible for managing and regulating all aspects of transport in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. This includes building and maintaining roads, overseeing public transport, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting road safety. The department is mandated to construct, maintain, and repair the provincial road network to meet the mobility needs of KwaZulu-Natal citizens.

Minimum Requirements

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
  • Valid Code B driving licence (manual transmission).
  • No criminal record (SAPS clearance will be conducted).
  • Medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming ability to perform strenuous exercise.
  • Applicants must not be older than 35 years on the first day of enrolment.
  • Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be fit and proper to undergo full medical, physical, and psychological assessments.

Duties

Successful candidates will:

  • Enforce Road Traffic, Public Passenger and Transport Legislation.
  • Conduct point duty, traffic control, speed operations, and roadblocks.
  • Safeguard accident scenes and assist motorists at hazardous locations.
  • Escort abnormal vehicles and loads.
  • Conduct learner and driver’s licence tests.
  • Perform vehicle roadworthy tests and monitor DLTC and VTS compliance.
  • Participate in visible traffic policing and crime prevention activities.
  • Perform administrative duties, comply with firearm regulations, and attend court proceedings.

Important Information

  • Successful candidates will be appointed on a fixed-term two-year contract as Trainee Provincial Inspectors.
  • They must successfully complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma Course within this period to qualify for permanent appointment as a Provincial Inspector (Level 6).
  • Applicants will undergo written tests, driving evaluations, medicals, fitness tests, interviews, and criminal checks.
  • Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays on a 24/7 shift system.
  • Successful candidates must be able to bear arms and pass firearm competency tests.
