Job Description:
PURPOSE AND ROLE IN THE BUSINESS:
- The Projects Superintendent role is responsible for the scope, plan and delivery of the operation stay-in-business (SIB) projects.
- This position will entail overseeing the planning and delivery of the project / scope of work assigned for the operations.
- The role will include evaluating and outsourcing of projects via EPCM/EPC/Turnkey project possibilities and other.
- Projects will be delivered sustainably on time, costs and to standard.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Ensures compliance with all legal, environmental, occupational health and safety and risk management standards and best practices
- Effective safety leadership and behaviour modelling for the project team, contractors and construction workforce
- The development of an integrated plan (for the scope of work) incorporating all stakeholders and technical functions and in line with Anglo American standards
- Set-up of required controls to ensure delivery against these standards and the objectives as defined in the project charter
- Provide input relating to project engineering scopes, time and cost assessments to the business
- Defining project needs statements and translate into appropriate requirements statements to support effective scope management in line with best practice principles
- Execute and optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of project engineering systems and processes.
- Perform and execute research type feasibility and project engineering activities
- Develop, implement and monitor standards and specifications for the execution of projects engineering
- Execute and provide guidance and assurance to project clerk of works to ensure technical and non-technical project integration controls
- Continuously monitor the exchange and protection of information to ensure effective knowledge management according to organisational objectives
- Execute and facilitate the integration of project engineering design and execution
- Plans and controls the process of protecting and archiving data source including review and analysis of closing/closed Projects.
- Optimises business and third party/vendor performance through commercial focus and quality analysis
- Leads continuous improvement and change to improve service quality/delivery
- Develop and support project engineering discipline and standards
- Must be able to articulate and supply accurate monthly cashflows for short term and long term planning.
- Management of Cat 1 & 2 projects in line with project management principles and best practices, as well as financial control, design, quality, safety and scheduling. Integration of project delivery into the Mine’s operational environment. Provide a technical input into Cat 3 & 4 projects running on the mine.
- Lead and coordinate the Stay in Business (SIB) engineering effort to meet DeBeers Group and Anglo-American standards, specifications and procedures throughout the Life of Mine (LOM).
- Maintain discipline alignment with Key Stakeholders, Principal Engineers, Specialist Discipline Engineers and Section Engineering Managers.
- Support successful project delivery within cost and schedule baselines.
- Assure that all fabrication and construction quality standards are met.
- Enhance and maintain integration and teamwork between the various technical disciplines and appointed engineering consultants
- Responsible for compiling and approval of cost estimates for projects (Working Cost and Capital) prior to submission for approval.
Responsible to supply monthly cashflow forecasts to the Programme Manager and Finance Team in line with the monthly SIB Calendar deliverables.
- Manage and control the allocation of funds to ensure adherence to approved budgeted expenditure and change management.
- Assess the legal and pemitting requirements to be implemented within project responsibility area.
- Provide technical consulting services for the operation related to specialisation and project execution discipline, incliding Risk Reviews and Risk Mitigation Controls.
- Manage project team resources (project labour, client relationships and partners).
- Project, construction, and operational experience in the mining industry.
- Technical areas including Electrical, Control and Instrumentation, Metallurgy, Project Engineering.
Construction / Engineering project management
- Contractor Performance Management will be a key attribute to the success of the role.
- Mining Project Development, Execution, Commissioning and Handover.
- Leading and Coordinating E&I and Metallurgical Plant project detail engineering and development.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: (Education & Experience)
- Grade 12 certificate, or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification
- BTech/Degree Mechanical/ Electrical/ Process Engineering with a minimum of 6 years’ experience in Project, Construction, and operational experience in the mining industry
- Qualification in Project Management is advantageous
- Valid EB/Code 8 Drivers License
- Successfully obtain a Red Ticket (Medical Fitness certificate) on mine

SKILLS/ COMPETENCIES:
- Experience in Project management processes from initiation, planning, execution and project close out.
- Identify and manage risk imposed on project development and execution i.e. strategic thinking and planning
- Drives the delivery of technical solutions in projects and operations by demonstrating project management skills and active resource management, including effective control of budgets, deliverables, staff and contracts
- Recognizes, understands and manages engineering risks that impact on the overall business success and strategic objectives.
- Skills and knowledge to integrate projects into engineering maintenance activities in a sub-process or several sub processes
- Able to collaborate with relevant stakeholders regarding technical and non-technical issues in developing the scope of work and implementation plan.
- Has a good understanding and appreciation of engineering theory, design and practice to be able to resolve engineering problems with guidance or to engage or co-ordinate others to do the necessary work.
- Has the ability to meet deadlines and targets.
- Has excellent conflict management skills.
- Excellent people skills, including good communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- SAP working knowledge is advantageous.
- Good knowledge and experience in using the MS suite of products
- Construction management experience is advantageous
- Demonstrated experience in contract development and management essential
- Provides consistent outstanding behaviour in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety
