Fields of Study Covered
The bursary is available for students pursuing qualifications in the following Health Science fields:
- Dental Surgery (BSc)
- Emergency Care Assistant (Higher Certificate)
- Emergency Medical Care (National Diploma)
- Medicine (MBChB/Degree)
- Nursing (Bachelor’s Degree, B Tech, Higher Certificate R169, Diploma R171, and R174)
- Occupational Therapy (BSc)
- Pharmacy (Degree)
- Physiotherapy (BSc)
- Radiography (Diagnostic, Therapy, and Ultrasound) (BSc)
- Speech Therapy (Degree)
Note: The list of supported qualifications may change annually based on departmental service delivery needs.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary covers:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Examination fees
Accommodation costs are not covered.
Successful candidates must:
- Sign a full-time bursary contract with the Department
- Complete mandatory community service (if applicable)
- Work for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness to fulfill the service obligation, or refund the bursary if not fulfilled
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Reside in the Western Cape
- Have completed Matric
- Be studying or planning to study full-time in one of the listed Health Science qualifications
- Be enrolled at or accepted by an accredited Higher Education Institution
- Be hardworking, dedicated, and willing to complete required clinical hours
- Have no criminal record
