The Umzimvubu Local Municipality (EC442) is a Category B municipality located within the Alfred Nzo District in the north-western part of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The name “Umzimvubu” is an isiXhosa word meaning “home of the hippopotamus,” named after the Mzimvubu River. The municipality includes the urban centres of KwaBhaca (Mount Frere) and eMaxesibeni (Mount Ayliff). he municipality is working on improving access to basic services, including the electrification of rural households and the development of the large-scale Mzimvubu Water Project, which aims to address water scarcity challenges in the region.
