The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is a government department, primarily operating in South Africa, responsible for the management and regulation of the country’s water resources and the provision of water and sanitation services. The mission of the DWS is to ensure that all citizens have access to clean water and dignified sanitation, while promoting effective and efficient water resources management for sustainable economic and social development. The DWS operates based on the mandate set out in South Africa’s National Water Act of 1998 and the Water Services Act of 1997.
Requirements and Expectations
Minimum Requirements
- ABET Certificate (higher qualifications will serve as an added advantage).
- No experience required, but two (2) or more years of experience in manual work or grounds maintenance will be an added advantage.
- Knowledge of gardening tools and equipment, including lawn care, pruning, and trimming techniques.
- Understanding of chemical use, including dilution, mixing, and application of fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides.
- Basic knowledge of maintenance procedures for efficient operation of equipment.
- Familiarity with water utilization and resource support activities.
- Understanding of health and safety procedures and garden maintenance practices.
- Basic knowledge of government regulations related to environmental or safety compliance.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in or near rivers, dams, canals, and confined spaces.
- Must be willing to assist other schemes and maintenance teams when required.
- Must be punctual, productive, and reliable.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain and clean grounds, gardens, and outdoor facilities.
- Repair tools and small structures (e.g., fences, benches, and buildings) using hand and power tools.
- Mix and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides using manual or automatic sprayers.
- Care for lawns, plants, and trees, including raking, mulching, trimming, and irrigation.
- Clean sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, and other outdoor areas.
- Perform basic maintenance on gardening equipment and refer major issues to service providers.
- Keep accurate maintenance and inspection records, including job cards and equipment logs.
- Conduct regular inspections and report defects such as cracks, erosion, or stagnant water.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards at all times.
