About Ampath

Ampath is a large network of pathology laboratories operating primarily in South Africa. It provides a full range of diagnostic and clinical pathology services to medical professionals, patients, and various healthcare organizations.

Job Description

As a Consultant Microbiologist, you play a central role in supporting both clinicians and patients through thoughtful, expert consultation and the delivery of a dependable pathology service. This role combines specialist insight with the day‑to‑day leadership needed to guide a high‑performing laboratory environment. You will take the lead in shaping a service where people feel supported, equipped to grow, and confident in the quality of results that influence critical care decisions.

Role Requirements

To thrive in this role, you bring the essential medical and specialist credentials that support sound clinical judgement and responsible practice. You hold an MBChB, complemented either a M.Med (Pathology) or FC Path SA (Microbiology), and you are registered with the HPCSA as a Specialist in Pathology in Microbiology. These qualifications ensure that the service you provide is rooted in professional expertise, ethical standards and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Skills Requirements

This role calls for strong communication, clinical reasoning and leadership skills. You bring an approachable, collaborative style that helps build meaningful client relationships and keeps engagement at the centre of how the laboratory operates. Your ability to mentor others, encourage shared learning, and support capability development contributes to a workplace where people are confident, committed and ready to grow. You are also able to maintain professional standards, promote best practice, and ensure the laboratory’s work meets the highest expectations.

Role Impact

You help guide clinical decisions, uphold the credibility of the pathology service, and create an environment where high‑quality results are produced consistently. Through your leadership, the laboratory remains a space where people are empowered, engaged and able to deliver exceptional service to patients and clinicians. You support continuous education within pathology, contribute to the organisation’s reputation, and help attract and nurture talent that strengthens our long‑term capability and succession pipeline. In this role, you are not only advancing microbiology expertise—you are shaping an environment where people and performance grow together. Active clinician engagement, visibility in hospitals, collaboration with pharmacy and infection control teams, and participation in local molecular diagnostics programs are key aspects of your responsibilities.
