The Eastern Cape Department of Health has advertised a large intake of Emergency Care Officers (Grade 1β3) across seven EMS districts. These posts fall under the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) and provide employment opportunities for candidates registered with the HPCSA as Basic Ambulance Assistants (BAA) or Ambulance Emergency Assistants (AEA).
Successful candidates will be responsible for rendering emergency medical care, transporting patients, maintaining EMS vehicles and equipment, and performing administrative duties according to HPCSA protocols.
Salary Levels
- Grade 1: R187 488 β R214 368 per annum (OSD)
- Grade 3: R217 983 β R286 521 per annum (OSD)

Minimum Requirements (All Posts)
Grade 1 (BAA)
- National Senior Certificate
- Completed Basic Life Support (BLS) course
- HPCSA registration as Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA)
- Code 10 driverβs licence with PDP
- Knowledge of Basic Life Support protocols
Grade 3 (AEA)
- Completed Intermediate Life Support (ILS) course
- HPCSA registration as Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA)
- Code 10 driverβs licence with PDP
- Knowledge of Intermediate Life Support protocols
Duties (All Districts)
- Provide emergency medical care according to HPCSA protocols
- Transport sick and injured patients safely
- Complete patient records, vehicle checklists, log sheets and administration
- Clean and maintain ambulances, base stations and medical equipment
- Perform inter-facility patient transfers
- Perform any duties assigned by the EMS supervisor
