The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa is the government body responsible for managing national identity, citizenship, and immigration services. It acts as the custodian of personal records for all South African citizens and foreign nationals residing in the country.

This recruitment drive forms part of government efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and border management across the country. Successful candidates will help enforce the Immigration Act and Refugees Act, assist with investigations, and support law enforcement operations related to illegal immigration.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • An undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 6) in one of the following fields:
    • Law
    • Public Management
    • Public Administration
    • Policing
    • Criminology
    • Forensics
    • Criminal Justice
  • Knowledge of:
    • Immigration Act
    • Refugees Act
    • South African Constitution
    • Public Service regulatory framework
  • A valid driver’s licence (Code B/C1/C/EC1)
  • A valid Public Driver Permit (PDP)
  • Willingness to travel outside borders and work extended hours

Key Duties of Immigration Officers

Immigration Officers will be responsible for enforcing immigration legislation and ensuring compliance across South Africa.

Key duties include:

  • Enforcing the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002) and related legislation
  • Detecting, tracing, and detaining illegal foreigners
  • Processing deportations to countries of origin
  • Conducting law enforcement investigations and inspections
  • Participating in anti-corruption and crime combatting operations
  • Preparing evidence and statements for court proceedings
  • Issuing fines and notices to appear before the Director-General
  • Monitoring immigration records and cases
  • Participating in joint security cluster operations
  • Ensuring compliance with immigration permits and condition
