Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) was established when the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande in terms of section 20 of the Higher Education Act 1997 (Act 101 of 1997) promulgated the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in the SA Government Gazette no: 37658 of 16 May 2014. The promulgation followed the announcement made in 2011, by Minister Nzimande, when he announced his intention to separate the Medunsa Campus, from the University of Limpopo. The minister’s intention was based on the findings and recommendations of the task team that was established and led by Prof Malegapuru Makgoba, former Vice-Chancellor of University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) and Dr Max Price, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Town (UCT).

Below are the details of the current vacancies:

1. Investigation Officer

Reference: 87/2024/NGM/P11

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with relevant security training and certification.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in security and investigation, including public policing (SAPS).
  • Valid South African light motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to obtain PSIRA Grade B certification after appointment.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to work beyond normal hours and handle sensitive matters with confidentiality.
  • No criminal record (pending or convicted).

As an Investigation Officer, you will be responsible for investigating incidents, managing security issues, and assisting with internal investigations to ensure safety and compliance within the university.

2. Secretary

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric (Grade 12) and a 3-year Secretarial or Office Administration qualification.
  • At least 3 years’ secretarial experience, ideally in an academic environment.
  • Experience with agenda preparation, minute-taking, and academic administration (student records and procurement).
  • Competence in using online platforms such as Blackboard Collaborate, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

The Secretary will provide administrative support, manage scheduling, document meetings, and facilitate effective communication within the university.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Familiarity with ITS system for entering student assessment marks.

  • Experience in agenda preparation, minute-taking, and action tracking.

As an Administrative Officer, you will be responsible for organizing meetings, managing student records, and supporting the academic department’s day-to-day operations.

  • Basic computer literacy.

The Driver will assist with transportation needs within the university, ensuring smooth operations and timely travel arrangements.
