The Department of Agriculture, Western Cape Government has an opportunity for a suitably qualified and competent individual to facilitate trade by developing, implementing, maintaining, reporting on systems for the purposes of maintaining food safety, animal and human health and wellbeing, certification integrity, product tradability and supporting international trade.

Minimum Requirements | An appropriate Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc/BVMCh or equivalent qualification) recognised by the South African Veterinary Council; Compulsory registration as a Veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC); A minimum of 1 year post qualification experience; A valid (Code B or higher) driving licence. NB: People with disabilities that restrict driving abilities, but who have reasonable access to transport, may also apply. |
Recommendation | Masters degree (or higher qualification); Experience in the following: Database design; Video editing and YouTube. |
Key Performance Areas | Monitoring of the procedures and processes at the abattoirs, food processing and animal by-product processing establishments to ensure compliance with national and international requirements for export; Certification of exports of live animals, meat, meat products and animal products; Implementation of remedial and control actions if export requirements are not met; Record keeping and reporting of activities and export data as required; Participation in provincial export product safety programmes. |
Competencies | Knowledge of the following: Meat Safety Act, 2000 (Act 40 of 2000) and the regulations and policy pertaining to this act; Ante-mortem and post-mortem examinations of animals/birds, with special reference to zoonotic or other conditions that may affect humans; International requirements regarding meat safety, in particular requirements of the Codex Alimentarius Commission; Animal Disease Act, 1984 (Act 35 of 1984); Auditing of food establishment; Pathology; Asset management; Personnel management; Proven Communication (written and verbal) skills; Ability to: Work independently in a team; Work accurately and precisely; Work under stressful conditions. |
Remuneration | All-inclusive salary package of R 849 702 per annum (Salary level 11)
Note on remuneration: to-employer (CTE) remuneration packages for certain occupation-specific dispensations (OSD), the middle-management service (MMS) and contract positions are inclusive of all costs related to service benefits or obligations including basic salary, 13th cheque, medical assistance, housing assistance, pension-fund contributions, etc. MMS remuneration packages are flexible and may be individually structured as prescribed. Where remuneration is not indicated as CTE, employees’ service benefits or obligations are funded or co-funded in terms of the applicable prescripts or collective agreements.
