It is wholly owned by the South African government through the Department of Public Enterprises. Transnet is a crucial part of the Southern African freight logistics chain, responsible for delivering thousands of tons of goods daily across South Africa and facilitating import and export commodities through the country’s main seaports. The company operates on a vertically integrated and commercially separated business model with the goal of enabling economic growth, reducing the cost of doing business, and providing integrated, efficient, safe, and reliable services.
Purpose of the Programme
The Transnet Boilermaker Apprenticeship Programme is designed to equip apprentices with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience required to become qualified artisans.
Apprentices will receive structured training that combines classroom learning with on-the-job exposure to prepare them for independent and productive performance in the workplace.
Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)
Upon completion, the apprentice is expected to demonstrate competence in:
- Planning and preparing work sites, tools, consumables, and materials.
- Using hand, power, and measuring tools effectively.
- Manufacturing, assembling, and inspecting metal components.
- Commissioning, modifying, and repairing metal structures and installations.
- Conducting tests and inspections to ensure quality and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:
Option 1: N2 Certificate (with the following subjects)
- Mathematics (Pure)
- Engineering Science
- Plating & Structural Drawing
- Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
- Metal Worker’s Theory
- Plater’s Theory
Option 2: N3–N6 Certificate

Option 3: NCV Level 4 (Vocational)
