KwaZulu-Natal Museum is a popular natural and cultural history museum located in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, known for its extensive collections including a life-size T-Rex model and a replica Victorian street. The museum houses significant national heritage collections and features both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collection Development: Through acquiring new items (i.e. books, journals, etc.).
- Preservation of Collections: Ensure that collections are kept under suitable conditions. Continuously observe the condition of collections and ensuring that necessary intervention occurs. Develop disaster management plan for the library.
- Staff Management and Development: Training of library staff. Arranging external training programmes when necessary. Compilation of procedures manuals.
- User Training: Ensure that users are able to utilise library services (e.g. searching facilities).
- Record and Organise Information: Accessioning, Cataloguing, Classification, and Subject Indexing.
- Library Promotion: Conduct behind the scenes tours. Produce and update information pamphlets. Compilation of library web pages.
- Library Computer Systems Management: Approval on hardware and software upgrades and purchases.
- Organisation and maintenance of Sabinet link. Updating of library systems (e.g. ReQuest, Ariel, etc.)
Requirements:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information studies. An Honours qualification will serve as an advantage. Computer literacy and good understanding of budgetary processes and basic aspects of financial management are also required.
- Other skills include planning and project management, initiative and innovative thinking, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Good writing, presentation, communication and organising skills. Valid driver’s license (Code B).
