The uMgungundlovu District Municipality (DC22) is a Category C municipality located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, South Africa. Its seat is in Pietermaritzburg, which is also the capital and legislative capital of KwaZulu-Natal province. The district is an important hub for industry, timber, dairy, and agriculture, with key economic drivers including manufacturing (aluminium processing, clothing, and agro-processing), construction, and finance. 

The uMgungundlovu District Municipality is offering two Municipal Finance Intern positions aimed at highly motivated graduates who have recently completed a 3-year tertiary qualification in financial management fields.

This internship forms part of the KZN National Treasury Initiative, designed to develop finance capacity within Local Government. The objective is to build strong financial management skills and improve municipal administrative capability.

Important:
The municipality is not obligated to offer permanent employment or extend the contract beyond the 2-year period.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must have:

• BCom (Accounting) or B.Compt degree, OR
• National Diploma in:
  • Accounting
  • Taxation
  • Auditing
  • Cost & Management Accounting
  • Risk Management
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Computer literacy (MS Office)

Key Performance Areas

Interns will receive training and exposure in:

• Implementation of financial reforms & MFMA requirements
• General financial management duties
• Supply Chain Management processes (creditors & payables)
• Preparation of annual financial statements
• Budget preparation and MFMA returns
• Any duties delegated by Finance Management
